The history of Castle Mauterndorf

From medieval toll station to adventure castle for families

Traders, vagabonds, archbishops and nobles: Castle Mauterndorf in Salzburg's Lungau region has seen many travelers in its long history. And they all had one thing in common: they had to pay tolls here on their way across the Alps. Castle Mauterndorf is one of the last three remaining toll booths along the Via Imperialis, the Roman trade route from south to north. Today, the castle, fortified tower and other attractions delight visitors of all ages with numerous experiences.

Protection for the Roman road & toll castle of the prince archbishops

A Roman fort is said to have stood on the site of today's castle as early as the fourth century AD. This was intended to protect the road that led over the Radstädter Tauern to Juvavum - later to become Salzburg. A document issued by Emperor Henry II in 1002 states that a fortification was later built on this site. Castle Mauterndorf itself was first mentioned in a document in 1253. The Salzburg cathedral chapter had it built in the 13th century instead of the former toll station to protect the market town. The cathedral provost Burkhard von Weißpriach and Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach extended the castle complex in the 15th century. The latter in particular was very fond of the castle and used it as a summer residence.

Moving history

From state property to the ownership of the province of Salzburg

Until 1806, Castle Mauterndorf was owned by the cathedral chapter and functioned as its administrative center. It then became state property. From the beginning of the 19th century, the castle was increasingly threatened by decay. In 1894, it was acquired by the Prussian physician Dr. Hermann von Epenstein, who rebuilt the ensemble at great expense. After changing hands several times, the province of Salzburg acquired Castle Mauterndorf in 1968. From 1979 to 1982, the historic building was renovated at a total cost of around 1.45 million euros.
